Jordi Savall i Bernadet (born 1941, in Igualada, Catalonia, Spain) is a Spanish Catalan viol player, conductor, and composer. He has been one of the major figures in the field of early music since the 1970s, largely responsible for bringing the viol (viola da gamba) back to life on the stage. His repertory ranges from Medieval to Renaissance and Baroque music.

Savall's musical training started at age 6 in the school choir of his native town (1947-55). He later completed his training at the Barcelona Conservatory of Music (1959-65). Afterward, he began his specialisation in early music collaborating with Ars Musicae[clarification needed] and studying under August Wenzinger at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis in Basel, Switzerland (1968-70). In 1974 he succeeded Wenzinger as professor of viola da gamba at the Schola Cantorum Basiliensis.

In 1974 he formed the ensemble Hespèrion XX (known since 2000 as Hespèrion XXI), together with the soprano Montserrat Figueras (his wife), Lorenzo Alpert and Hopkinson Smith. Hespèrion XX favored a style of interpretation characterised by great musical vitality and at the same time, maximum historical accuracy.

In 1987 he returned to Barcelona to found La Capella Reial de Catalunya, a vocal ensemble devoted to the interpretation of music prior to the 18th century.
Finally, in 1989 Savall created Le Concert des Nations, an orchestra that is generally dedicated to the baroque repertoire, but which sometimes also serves as an outlet for music that hails from the classical/romantic repertoire (e.g. Sinfonía Grande Orquesta by Juan Crisóstomo de Arriaga).
More recently, Savall has performed with his family. The Savall family ensemble includes Jordi Savall's wife, Montserrat Figueras, and their two children, Arianna and Ferran. Arianna Savall plays the harp and sings, like her mother. Ferran Savall plays the theorbo (bass lute) and sings (not only with his family but also in jazz clubs in Barcelona).[1]

Begin the Beguine - artie shaw

Arthur Jacob Arshawsky (May 23, 1910 – December 30, 2004), better known as Artie Shaw, was an American jazz clarinetist, composer, and bandleader. He is also the author of both fiction and non-fiction writings.

Born Arthur Jacob Arshawsky in New York City, Shaw grew up in New Haven, Connecticut, where, according to his autobiography[1] his natural introversion was deepened by local antisemitism. Shaw began learning the saxophone when he was 13 years old, and by the age of 16, he switched to the clarinet and left home to tour with a band. Returning to New York, he became a session musician through the early 1930s. From 1925 until 1936, Shaw performed with many bands and orchestras, including those of Johnny Caverello and Austin Wylie. In 1929 and 1930 he played with Irving Aaronson's Commanders, where he was exposed to symphonic music, which he would later incorporate in his arrangements.
Shaw first gained critical acclaim with his "Interlude in B-flat" at a swing concert at the Imperial Theater in New York in 1935.[2] During the swing era, Shaw's big band was popular with hits like "Begin the Beguine" (1938), "Stardust" (with a trumpet solo by Billy Butterfield), "Back Bay Shuffle", "Moonglow", "Rosalie" and "Frenesi." He was an innovator in the big band idiom, using unusual instrumentation; "Interlude in B-flat", where he was backed with only a rhythm section and a string quartet, was one of the earliest examples of what would be later dubbed third stream.[3]
In addition to hiring Buddy Rich, he signed Billie Holiday as his band's vocalist in 1938, becoming the first white bandleader to hire a full-time black female singer to tour the segregated Southern US.[3] However, after recording "Any Old Time" she left the band due to hostility from audiences in the South, as well as from music company executives who wanted a more "mainstream" singer.[3] His band became enormously successful, and his playing was eventually recognized as equal to that of Benny Goodman: longtime Duke Ellington clarinetist Barney Bigard cited Shaw as his favorite clarinet player.[4] In response to Goodman's nickname, the "King of Swing", Shaw's fans dubbed him the "King of the Clarinet." Shaw, however, felt the titles were reversed. "Benny Goodman played clarinet. I played music," he said.[5]
Shaw prized innovation and exploration in music more highly than popular success and formulaic dance music, despite a string of hits which sold more than 100 million records.[2] He fused jazz with classical music by adding strings to his arrangements, experimented with bebop, and formed "chamber jazz" groups that utilized such novel sounds as harpsichords or Afro-Cuban music.
The long series of musical groups Shaw formed included such talents as vocalists Billie Holiday, Helen Forrest and, Mel Tormé; drummers Buddy Rich and Dave Tough, guitarists Barney Kessel, Jimmy Raney, and Tal Farlow and trombonist-arranger Ray Conniff, among countless others. He composed the morose "Nightmare", with its Hassidic nuances, for his personal theme, rather than more approachable songs. In a televised interview of the 1970s, Shaw derided the often "asinine" songs that bands were compelled to play night after night. In 1994, he told Frank Prial (The New York Times), "I thought that because I was Artie Shaw I could do what I wanted, but all they wanted was 'Begin the Beguine.' " [6]

Kirshbaum has recorded extensively; selections from his discography are shown below. His cello was crafted in 1729 by the Italian maker Domenico Montagnana.

Goldfrapp- Horse Tears

Goldfrapp is an English electronic music duo, formed in 1999 in London, England, and consists of Alison Goldfrapp (vocals/synthesizer) and Will Gregory (synthesizer).
Despite favourable reviews and a shortlisting for the Mercury Prize, the ambient sound of their 2000 debut album Felt Mountain did not chart highly.[1][2] Goldfrapp's second album Black Cherry, which incorporated glam rock and synthpop sounds into their music, was released in 2003. The album experienced success across nightclubs in North America and influenced the same dance-oriented sound of their third album Supernature.[3] Supernature took Goldfrapp's work further into dance music, and enjoyed international chart success.[1][4] Supernature produced three number-one U.S. dance singles, and was nominated for Best Electronic/Dance Album at the 49th Grammy Awards.[5] Their fourth album Seventh Tree placed a greater emphasis on ambient and downtempo music, drawing inspiration from nature and paganism,[6]while their fifth album, Head First, found the group exploring '80s synth-pop and dance.

Fear of the dark - iron maiden

Solist Bruce Dickinson'ın gruba katılmasının ardından 1982 yılında yayımladıkları The Number of the Beast adlı albümleriyle Iron Maiden dünya çapında şöhrete erişmiş ve 1980'ler boyunca peş peşe çıkardıkları albümlerle büyük başarı kazanmıştır. 2006'da piyasaya çıkan grubun son stüdyo albümü A Matter of Life and Death Billboard 200 listesinde dokuz numaraya kadar yükselmiştir.
Grubun etkilendiği gruplardan bazıları Thin Lizzy, UFO, Deep Purple, Uriah Heep ve Wishbone Ash'tir. Iron Maiden müzik kanalı MTV'nin "tüm zamanların en iyi heavy metal grupları" listesinde dördüncü sırada yeralmıştır.[3]

modern times - charlie chaplin

Slow Down Blues - joe satriani

Joe "Satch" Satriani (d. 15 Temmuz 1956) Westbury, New York doğumlu enstrümental rock gitaristi ve dünyanın en büyük elektro gitar virtiözlerinden birisidir.
1970'lerin ortasında, Joe "The Squares" adlı bir yerel grupta çalmaktadır.
Guitar World, Guitar Player gibi dergilerden övgü üstüne övgü alır."Not of This Earth" plağının çıkışından sonra Joe çeşitli ev kayıtları yapmaya devam eder. Sonrasında ise diğer eserler için Cuniberti' nin Hyde Street Stüdyoları geçer.1987 yılında, onun adını gitar ve müzik dünyasına perçinleyecek klasiği olan "Surfing with the Alien" yine Relativity Plakçılıktan yayımlanır.1988 yılı içinde, kendisinin ikinci kısa albümü olan "Dreaming No. 11"i çıkarır.Kayıt kısa sürede altın plak alır. Albüm aynı zamanda Joe' ya ikinci Grammy adaylığına da ulaştırır.1989 yılında "Flying in a Blue Dream" isimli albümünü yayınlar.

2000 yılından sonra sound olarak çok daha farklı ve çeşitli öğelerle kendisini yenileyen Satriani, 2002'de "Strange Beautiful Music" albümünü, 2004'te "Is There Love in Space?" albümünü, 2006'da ise "Super Colossal" albümünü yayımlar. Bu seneler içerisinde bir yandan değişik müzisyenler ile G3 turnesine devam ederken "Live in San Francisco" ve "The Electric Joe Satriani: An Anthology" gibi toplama ve konser kayıtlarından oluşan albümleri de dinleyicileri le paylaşır.
1 Nisan 2008 de yeni albümü "Professor Satchafunkilus And The Musterion Of Rock" raflarda yerini alır.
(wikipedia)

You Don't Have to Go - Jimmy Reed

Reed was born in Dunleith, Mississippi in 1925, learning the harmonica and guitar from Eddie Taylor, a close friend. After spending several years busking and performing in the area, Reed moved to Chicago, Illinois, in 1943 before being drafted into the US Navy during World War II. In 1945, Reed was discharged and moved back to Mississippi for a brief period, marrying his girlfriend, Mary "Mama" Reed, before moving to Gary, Indiana to work at an Armour & Co. meat packing plant. Mama Reed appears as an uncredited background singer on many of his songs, notably the major hits "Baby What You Want Me to Do", "Big Boss Man" and "Bright Lights, Big City".
By the 1950s, Reed had established himself as a popular musician and joined the "Gary Kings" with John Brim, as well as playing on the street with Willie Joe Duncan. Reed failed to gain a recording contract with Chess Records, but signed with Vee-Jay Records through Brim's drummer, Albert King. At Vee-Jay, Reed began playing again with Eddie Taylor and soon released "You Don't Have to Go", his first hit record. This was followed by a long string of hits.
Reed maintained his reputation, in spite of rampant alcoholism; sometimes his wife had to help him remember the lyrics to his songs while performing.[citation needed] In 1957, Reed developed epilepsy, though the condition was not correctly diagnosed for a long time, as Reed and doctors assumed it was delirium tremens.[citation needed]
In spite of his numerous hits, Reed's personal problems prevented him from achieving the same level of fame as other popular blues artists of the time, though he had more hit songs than many others. When Vee-Jay Records closed down, Reed's manager signed a contract with the fledgling ABC-Bluesway label, but Reed was never able to score another hit.
In 1968 he toured Europe with the American Folk Blues Festival.[2]
Jimmy Reed died in Oakland, California in 1976,[1] eight days short of his 51st birthday. He is interred in the Lincoln Cemetery in Worth, Illinois.
In 1991 Reed was posthumously inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.

Mad World - gary jules (donnie darko)

“Falling Awake”, the first song from Gary Jules’ independently released self-titled album appeared on two separate Billboard ‘Top 100’ charts in January 2007, one week after being heavily featured in an exceptionally popular episode of “Grey’s Anatomy”.When the editorial staff at Billboard learned that Jules’ sales numbers were generated solely by iTunes downloads with no commercial radio airplay, record company, manager, publicist, publisher, radio or licensing agent to ‘sell’ the new album into the public eye, they wrote a full-page feature detailing Jules’ unlikely rise to recognition with his album “Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets” (featuring a cover of Tears for Fears’ “Mad World”) and the excitement surrounding the early success of his follow-up, “Gary Jules”.
A live performance of “Falling Awake” on Last Call with Carson Daly on March 21st has sparked a scramble for worldwide physical release and international tour plans, and locked-up opening slots for Tears for Fears this summer.
After years struggling in the nascent Los Angeles underground singer-songwriter scene of the mid-90’s, Gary Jules’ first record “Greetings from the Side” was recorded for A&M Records and released in August 1998. Weeks later A&M’s parent label Polygram was bought by MCA/Universal. Jules and “Greetings” were lost in the proverbial shuffle, but not before both received considerable critical acclaim. Zeke Piestrup of VH-1’s show “Fresh” called Jules “The best American singer-songwriter to emerge out of the late ’90’s — and the only one worthy of being mentioned in the same sentence with Paul Simon, James Taylor, Cat Stevens and Nick Drake.”
In 2001 Jules’ original independent release of “Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets,” which included a cover of Tears For Fears’ “Mad World” that Jules recorded with friend and producer Michael Andrews for the film “Donnie Darko,” arrived to even more critical acclaim. The Village Voice called it “the best album to be released this year, anywhere. Period.” Rolling Stone Magazine said “Trading Snakeoil for Wolftickets is at once beautiful and haunting, depressing and inspiring, lonely and welcoming — delicately crafted folk music of the highest order.” In October 2001, Richard Kelly’s film “Donnie Darko” came out in theaters and quickly became a cult phenomenon. Not bad for an album created in a basement for less than $100.
In 2002 “Snakeoil” was championed by Nic Harcourt, host of “Morning Becomes Eclectic” at KCRW-FM in Los Angeles, and by Bruce Warren at WXPN-FM in Philadelphia. With these giants of listener-supported radio spreading the word, Jules toured constantly as an independent artist, sharing the stage with Jack Johnson, Damien Rice, Sheryl Crow, Beck, Mason Jennings, Jewel, Jason Mraz, The Polyphonic Spree, Liz Phair, and Todd Rundgren. His year-long residency at the then anonymous Hotel Cafe in Hollywood has become the stuff of legend in the new LA underground.
In the Fall of 2003 the Jules/Andrews version of “Mad World” started receiving major airplay in the UK. One story goes that it was originally played on-air by Robbie Williams during a guest DJ spot. Others say it was Radiohead’s Thom Yorke. Either way, Jules and “Snakeoil” were licensed by Adventures/Sanctuary and in December, fueled by a slew of powerful live television performances and tons of old-fashioned word-of-mouth, Gary Jules and Michael Andrews became only the 6th American act ever to win the coveted “Christmas #1.”
“Snakeoil” was released in the UK and Europe in early 2004. Jules went gold, then platinum, in fewer than 8 weeks and in several different European territories. “Mad World” was the biggest single of the year.
Jules also played more than 300 live shows from Summer 2003 through August 2004 in the US, Australia, UK and Europe, including a 3-week Summer ‘04 run with Bob Dylan, from Ireland to Portugal.
In August 2004, Gary and his wife Greta welcomed the birth of their first child.
In 2006 Jules recorded his self-produced, and self-titled album, released it independently with longtime friends CdBaby.com, then left Los Angeles and moved to the mountains of Western North Carolina, where he is building a home studio and making plans for tours of the US, Canada, Australia, and the United Kingdom.

All around me are familiar faces
Worn out places
Worn out faces
Bright and early for the daily races
Going no where
Going no where
Their tears are filling up their glasses
No expression
No expression
Hide my head I wanna drown my sorrow
No tomorrow
No tomorrow
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles it's a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Children waiting for the day they feel good
Happy birthday
Happy birthday
And I feel the way that every child should
Sit and listen
Sit and listen
Went to school and I was very nervous
No one knew me
No one knew me
Hello teacher tell me what's my lesson
Look right through me
Look right through me
And I find it kind of funny
I find it kind of sad
The dreams in which I'm dying are the best I've ever had
I find it hard to tell you
I find it hard to take
When people run in circles its a very very
Mad world
Mad world
Illogical world
Mad world

Etrafımda hep tanıdık yüzler,
Yipranmış yerler, yıpranmış yüzler,
Aydınlık ve erken bir gün yarışları için,
Hiç bir yere gitmezler,

Gözyaşları gözlüklerine dolar,
İfade yok, ruhlar yok,
Çevirdim kafamı, kederimde boğulmaya,
Yarın yok, yarın yok,

Bir tür eğlence buldum bunu,
Bir tür keder, üzüntü,
İçinde olduğum rüyalar,
En iyileriydi, şimdiye kadar,

Sana söylemek zordu bunu,
Hem, üstlenmek zordu,
Daireler içinde döner insanlar,
Buradalar,
Deli dünyada, deli dünyadalar,

Çocuklar bekliyorlar güzel günleri,
"Mutlu yıllar", "iyi ki doğdun",
Her çocuk anlıyor, "oturup dinlemeyi",
"Oturup dinlemeyi",

Okula gittiüimde ürkektim,
Kimse bilmedi beni,
"- Öğretmenim, söyle bana ödevimi!"
Gör beni, gör yüreğimi!"

Bir tür eğlence buldum bunu,
Bir tür keder, üzüntü,
İçinde olduğum rüyalar,
En iyileriydi, şimdiye kadar,

Sana söylemek zordu bunu,
Hem, üstlenmek zordu,
Daireler içinde döner insanlar,
Buradalar,
Deli dünyada, deli dünyadalar

Koop is Magnus Zingmark & Oscar Simonsson. When listening to Koops music it's somehow easy to believe that it's played by a small orchestra, but in fact the music is based on samples. Thousands of small clips from records puzzled together into new songs. All the drums, strings, horn sections and choires are actually sampled! This is a very time consuming way to make music (it's one of the reasons it takes such long time to make a koop album), but it's the only way to create the surreal Koop sound. One thing though, that for sure aren't sampled, is the vocals. Many singers has blessed the Koop albums with their talent, and on Koop Islands the singers are : Yukimi Nagano, Ane Brun, Hilde-Louise Asbjornsen,Rob Gallagher and Mikael Sundin. Some fine musicians has also participated on the album playing solos, percussion and bass. Those are : Mattias Ståhl, Magnus Lindgren, Karl Frid, Nils Berg, Martin Höper, Ola Bothzén, Dan Berglund and Mats Lindfors. When playing live Koop transforms into a 7-9 piece swing orchestra including one or two singers, and the main mission is to make people move their feet. The line-up may vary from time to time so if you are looking for the personel on a specific concert please dont hesitate to drop a message on myspace. Koop them selves plays piano/accordion (Oscar), sampler (Magnus), and wear dresses.

Before we start we need you to do one thing. Listen to Come To Me. If you ask me, that song encapsules almost everything you need to know about Koop Islands.
After just a few seconds your´re in two completely different places at the same time. Come To Me is the point where the Swedish summer solstice meets a Caribbean christmas. It´s where the sweetest melody ever swings easy on a faraway beach where Santa Clause handles the steel pans. Welcome to Koop Islands. A place where music and life swing to a slightly different drum. It´s been four years since we last heard from the Stockholm based duo of Oscar Simonsson and Magnus Zingmark. Their album Waltz for Koop slowly but surely found it´s way into the hearts of more than 160.000 record buyers across the globe. Then followed the world tours, the two sets a night at the Blue Note and hundreds of remixes, until finally they found themselves back in Stockholm able to begin work on what was to become Koop Islands. Where Waltz For Koop was steeped in a modern – and modernist - take on 60s jazz and swedish songstressess from the time (Monica Zetterlunds name was mentioned more times than the group thought was fair), Koop Islands has – despite its name - very little to do with romanticising the Stockholm archipelago. Rather, it goes much, much further south west, all the way down the caribbiean for inspiration. That´s where you´ll find Koop Islands on their imaginary world map. Also, Magnus and Oscar realised that sometimes the only way forwards is to go as far back in history as possible. - I think we can do that, says Magnus. Our music is created in a post-sampling world where everything is possible. Even time travel. That´s why we just laugh if somone calls what we do retro.

So back they went. Back to the swing of the 1930s, the exoticism of forgotten orchestras and entertainers performing on late 40s yacht cruises to Jamaica. The characteristic Koop vibes now joined by marimbas, furious gene krupaesque jungle drums (just listen to them rip on Forces… Darling) and an ever present Cape Verdean Blues with just a hint of Mento that would have made islanders in european exile, like the recently salvaged Lord Kitchener & His Friends, nod in approval. This journey in time and music is what forms the foundation Koop Islands was built on. We create jazz music, says Oscar. It´s as simple as that. We can´t do pop, electronica, techno or whatever because we´re just no good at it. Knowing this and having accepted it we can basically do whatever we want. If we wanna explore and pick up pieces from, say, 1929 – we can. On their travels towards Koop Islands they were joined by their inner circle of friends, some of whom you might remember from Waltz For Koop. The amazing Yukimi Nagano with her free flowing vocals and her male counterpart - the criminally underrated Mikael Sundin. Ex-Galliano main man Rob Gallagher tells a heartbreaking tale that weaves together tennis ace Björn Borg with the sad story of the passing of a mother. On the american release of the album is a new track, "Strange Love", included. It's sung by Hilde Louise Asbjornsen, a new swinging discovery and the main singer in the koop live set. And, last but no way least, on the album´s title track the norweigan singer-songwriter Ane Brun heads out on her virgin tour of the Islands. Even though Magnus and Oscars hearts and souls are filled with exotic and eclecticly swinging sounds the whole album was produced and recorded in their own tiny studio on Stockholms Södermalm. If you listen very carefully you can hear the number 4 bus go by on the snowy street outside.
