dianne reeves, mista

Dianne Reeves has been one of the top singers in jazz ever since the late '80s. A logical successor to Dinah Washington and Carmen McRae (although even she can not reach the impossible heights of Ella and Sarah Vaughan), Reeves is a superior interpreter of lyrics and a skilled scat singer. She was a talented vocalist with an attractive voice even as a teenager when she sang and recorded with her high school band. She was encouraged by Clark Terry, who had her perform with him while she a college student at the University of Colorado.

Now we are free - hans zimmer

Mini biography from IMDB

German-born composer Hans Zimmer is recognized as one of Hollywood’s most innovative musical talents‚ having first enjoyed success in the world of pop music as a member of The Buggles. The group’s single Video Killed the Radio Star became a worldwide hit and helped usher in a new era of global entertainment as the first music video to be aired on MTV.

Zimmer entered the world of film music in London during a long collaboration with famed composer and mentor Stanley Myers‚ which included the film My Beautiful Laundrette. He soon began work on several successful solo projects‚ including the critically acclaimed A World Apart‚ and during these years Zimmer pioneered the use of combining old and new musical technologies. Today‚ this work has earned him the reputation of being the father of integrating the electronic musical world with traditional orchestral arrangements.

A turning point in Zimmer’s career came in 1988 when he was asked to score Rain Man for director Barry Levinson. The film went on to win the Oscar for Best Picture of the Year and earned Zimmer his first Academy Award Nomination for Best Original Score. The next year‚ Zimmer composed the score for another Best Picture Oscar recipient‚ Driving Miss Daisy‚ starring Jessica Tandy and Morgan Freeman.

Having already scored two Best Picture winners‚ in the early ’90s Zimmer cemented his position as a pre-eminent talent with the award-winning score for The Lion King. The soundtrack has sold over 15 million copies to date and earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Score‚ a Golden Globe‚ an American Music Award‚ a Tony and two Grammy Awards. In total‚ Zimmer’s work has been nominated for 7 Golden Globes‚ 7 Grammys and seven Oscars for “Rainman”‚ “Gladiator”‚ “The Lion King”‚ “As good As It Gets”‚ “The Preachers Wife”‚ “The Thin Red Line‚” “The Prince Of Egypt” and “The Last Samurai.”

With his career in full swing‚ Zimmer was anxious to replicate the mentoring experience he had benefited from under Stanley Myers’ guidance. With state-of-the-art technology and a supportive creative environment‚ Zimmer was able to offer film-scoring opportunities to young composers at his Santa Monica-based musical ’think tank.’ This approach helped launch the careers of such notable composers as Mark Mancina‚ John Powell‚ Harry Gregson-Williams‚ Nick Glennie-Smith and Klaus Badelt.

In 2000 Zimmer scored the music for Gladiator‚ for which he received an Oscar nomination‚ in addition to Golden Globe and Broadcast Film Critics Awards for his epic score. It sold more than three million copies worldwide and spawned a second album “Gladiator: More Music From The Motion Picture‚” released on the Universal Classics/Decca label. Zimmer’s other scores that year included Mission: Impossible 2‚ The Road To El Dorado and An Everlasting Piece‚ directed by Barry Levinson.

Some of his other impressive scores include Pearl Harbor‚ The Ring‚4 films directed by Ridley Scott; Matchstick Men‚ Hannibal‚ Black Hawk Down and Thelma & Louise‚ Penny Marshall’s Riding In Cars With Boys and A League Of Their Own‚ Quentin Tarantino’s True Romance‚ Tears Of The Sun‚ Ron Howard’s Backdraft‚ Days Of Thunder‚ Smilla’s Sense Of Snow and the animated Spirit: Stallion Of The Cimarron for which he also co-wrote four of the songs with Bryan Adams‚ including the Golden Globe nominated “Here I Am.”

At the 27th annual Flanders International Film Festival‚ Zimmer performed live for the first time in concert with a 100-piece orchestra and a 100-piece choir. Choosing selections from his impressive body of work‚ Zimmer performed newly orchestrated concert versions of Gladiator‚ Mission: Impossible 2‚ Rain Man‚ The Lion King‚ and The Thin Red Line. The concert was recorded by Decca and released as a concert album entitled "The Wings Of A Film: The Music Of Hans Zimmer."

In 2003‚ Zimmer completed his 100th film score for the film The Last Samurai‚ starring Tom Cruise‚ for which he received both a Golden Globe and a Broadcast Film Critics nomination. Over the past year‚ Zimmer has scored Nancy Meyers’ comedy Something’s Gotta Give‚ the animated Dreamworks film‚ A Shark’s Tale (featuring voices of Will Smith‚ Renee Zellweger‚ Robert De Niro‚ Jack Black and Martin Scorsese)‚ and most recently‚ Jim Brooks’ Spanglish starring Adam Sandler and Tea Leoni (for which he also received a Golden Globe nomination). His upcoming projects include Paramount’s Weatherman starring Nicolas Cage‚ Dreamworks’ Madagascar and highly anticipated Warner Bros. summer release‚ Batman Begins.

Zimmer’s additional honors and awards include the prestigious Lifetime Achievement Award in Film Composition from the National Board of Review‚ and the Frederick Loewe Award in 2003 at the Palm Springs International Film Festival. He has also received ASCAP’s Henry Mancini Award for Lifetime Achievement. Hans and his wife live in Los Angeles and he is the father of 4.

craig armstrong

A Royal Academy of Music graduate, Craig Armstrong passed through the ranks of his native city's band culture (a band member of Hipsway, Texas and The Big Dish) to become one of the world's most sought-after and respected composers and arrangers. In the contemporary field, Madonna, U2, Björk and Massive Attack are among the acts to have benefited from his talents, but he is also a skilled and experienced writer for theatre and film. Amongst his many credits are the scores for the Baz Luhrmann hits, William Shakespeare's 'Romeo + Juliet' (for which he received the Anthony Asquith BAFTA Award and an Ivor Novello for Best Original Score) and 'Moulin Rouge' (for which he received a Golden Globe Award and the American Film Institute Award).
Despite these achievements, Craig is a modest and pragmatic man. "I don't subscribe to the 'Artist as God' school of thought," he says, "I see musicians just as part of the workforce, no more or less valid than the practitioners of any other trade. Obviously, there's a spiritual element to music, but then there's a spiritual element to many things. If you can do it - whatever 'it' is - then do it, and try to do it well." Which, clearly, he does. Perhaps director Baz Luhrmann puts it as concisely as is possible: "What I love about your work is the way in which it's like a movie in itself, but without any pictures," he told Craig. Listening, you will know just what he meant.
Following his early, post-Royal Academy dalliances with melodic Scottish pop, the man himself made a leap of both faith and imagination. "When The Big Dish disintegrated, I took time to reassess," he says. "I was by then a husband and the father of a two-year-old child and had become aware that my time was not infinite. Life isn't such a long thing, and I realised that it was madness to spend it doing things that I didn't really want to do." Happily, two avenues of opportunity then opened up to him that provided the launching pads for the parallel careers he now follows with such success.
On the one hand he began to work extensively as an in-house composer with Glasgow's highly-respected Tron Theatre Company. "That proved to be fantastic experience for my subsequent film work," he says. It also helped develop the skills that have led to a variety of classical commissions; Craig has written for the Northern Sinfonietta, the Scottish Chamber Orchestra, the BT Ensemble and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra, who premiered his concert work 'When Morning Turns To Light' in December 2002.
On the other hand, his involvement with the short-lived band, The Kindness of Strangers, facilitated a working triumvirate that, for some five years, became one of the most influential and definitive in contemporary music. "They'd all but run out of money and hadn't enough left to hire a string arranger," Craig recalls. "Nellee Hooper was producing, and I said to him, 'Don't worry. I can do that for you'. He just laughed, 'Yeah. Sure you can.'" But, of course, Craig could, and did, and Nellee loved the results. With Marius De Vries as the other element to their trinity, this combination of talents ruled the pop airwaves in the late '90s. "For a time, it seemed like we were responsible for some of the most major tracks by some of the most major artistes in the world. We had a pretty amazing run of it, looking back." Subsequently, Craig's work with the Bristol collective Massive Attack (he scored the tracks 'Weatherstorm' and 'Heat Miser' for the 'Protection' album) led to him being signed to their record label, Melankolic. In 1998 they released his first solo album, 'The Space Between Us', which for the first time united the two separate strands of his work. "Now I'd say that it functions as a series of snapshots of who I was and what I'd been doing up until then. There was some original material there, and some examples of the film music I'd done ... I'm still proud and very fond of it.”
Whereas he describes his classical and film work as being 'pretty much the result of me having sat alone in a room', his second album, 'As If To Nothing', is very much a collaborative project. "I've had a lot of help from a lot of people and, I hope, have given them a lot of freedom. When you don't control every last detail, when you give someone the space in which to be themselves, then I think that you can get some really amazing results." His own vision, meanwhile, was for an album which, though not conceptual, had certain key musical and harmonic threads running through it, so providing cohesion.
In 2004 Craig Armstrong won his second Ivor Novello award for his score to Phillip Noyce's remake of 'The Quiet American', produced by Anthony Minghella and Sidney Pollack and starring Michael Caine. This award joins a long list of accolades and nominations which include 'The Bone Collector' (for which he received the 1999 ASCAP Award), 'Plunkett and Macleane', 'Best Laid Plans' and the Oscar-winning 'One Day In September'. Craig has also enjoyed a long relationship with the director Peter Mullan and has scored a number of his works; the 'Close' trilogy, 'Fridge', 'A Good Day For The Bad Guys' and 'Orphans' (which was voted Best Film at 1999's Venice Film Festival).
2004 also saw the release of Piano Works and the film scores to The Clearing and the Ray Charles' biopic 'Ray'.
2005 saw the release of Film Works, a new collection of Craig's past film scores and the release of The Dolls a collaborative effort featuring AGF and Delay.
2006 hopefully sees some much wanted live performances for Armstrong and The Dolls and a new film score to World Trade Center.

jhonnyguitar - peggy lee

ethel waters

Ethel Waters, - MyVideo

Ethel Waters was one of the most popular African-American singers and actresses of the 1920s. She moved to New York in 1919 after touring in vaudeville shows as a singer and a dancer. She made her recording debut in 1921 on Cardinal records with "The New York Glide" and "At the New Jump Steady Ball", but switched over to African-American owned Black Swan label, and recorded "Down Home Blues" and "Oh Daddy" the first Blues numbers for that company. She frequently sang with Fletcher Henderson during the early 1920s, but by the mid-1920s Waters had became more of a pop singer. She performed in a number of musical revues throughout the rest of the decade and appeared a couple of films, including "Check and Double Check" with Amos 'n' Andy and Duke Ellington. By the end of the 1930s she was a big star on Broadway. In 1949, she was nominated for an Oscar for best supporting actress in the film "Pinky", and the next year she won the New York Drama Critics Award for best actress. Waters got religion in the late Fifties and performed and toured with evangelist Billy Graham until her death in 1977.

The Sicilian Clan (Ennio Morricone Cover) - john zorn

John Zorn (born September 2, 1953 in New York City) is an American avant-garde composer, arranger, record producer, saxophonist and multi-instrumentalist. Zorn's recorded output is prolific with hundreds of album credits as a performer, composer, or producer. His work has touched on a wide range of musical genres, often within a single composition, but he is best-known for his avant-garde, jazz, improvised and contemporary classical music. Zorn has led the punk jazz band Naked City, the klezmer-influenced quartet Masada and composed the associated 'Masada Songbooks', written concert music for classical ensembles, and produced music for film and documentary. Zorn has stated that "I've got an incredibly short attention span. My music is jam-packed with information that is changing very fast... All the various styles are organically connected to one another. I'm an additive person - the entire storehouse of my knowledge informs everything I do. People are so obsessed with the surface that they can't see the connections, but they are there."[1]
After releasing albums on several independent US and European labels, Zorn signed with Elektra Nonesuch and attracted wide acclaim in 1985 when he released The Big Gundown with his interpretations of music composed by Ennio Morricone.[2] This was followed by the album Spillane in 1987, and the first album by Naked City in 1989 which all attracted further worldwide attention.[3][4][5][6] Zorn then recorded on the Japanese DIW label and curated the Avant subsidiary label before forming Tzadik in 1995, where he has been prolific, issuing several new recordings each year and releasing works by many other musicians.
Zorn established himself within the New York City downtown music movement in the early 1980s but has since composed and performed with a wide range of musicians working in diverse musical areas. By the early 1990s Zorn was working extensively in Japan, attracted by that culture's openness about borrowing and remixing ingredients from elsewhere, where he performed and recorded under the name Dekoboko Hajime, before returning to New York as a permanent base in the mid 1990's.[7][8][9] Zorn has undertaken many tours of Europe, Asia, and the Middle East, often performing at festivals with varying ensembles to display his diverse output

Hard to be a loser - rebekka bakken

Those who like it, probably know it well. And those who pretend not to like it possibly never experienced it: The dawn in the early morning hours when the mist slowly melts in the sun and the dewdrops still glisten auspiciously.

But what exactly is so special about morning hours that Rebkka Bakken named her new album after them? An early morning call shall enlighten us. “Oh,” she responds laughingly, “at this time of the day I’m not yet prepared for such a question.” And after a while she continues: “It is the time at which a day is not yet filled with impressions. When your mind is still pure and innocent... which is a beautiful state of mind. Everything comes out of a certain nothingness and has not yet lost its mysteries. I really like that.”

On “Morning Hours” she leaves her songs a lot of room to enfold. “All this space is important for me,” says Rebekka Bakken,“it is like a long, deep breath, like the instinct of life per se. In this space you deal with the things that really matter in life.” Her fourth album sounds different from its predecessors, more mysteriously and yet closer to reality. And it is her most romantic work to date. “I actually did not realize that at first. I really love the album because the songs sound like I wrote them. There’s nothing that stands between me and them. I did not have to elaborate much because I immediately felt comfortable with them.”

The fact that the Norwegian artist lived quite a long time in New York City and Vienna adds some charming and contrasting colours to her works. The music of her native country is still associated with notorious clichés. Rebekka, however, does not consider herself a musical landscape painter. “I never had the impression that my surroundings - neither at home nor abroad - contributed much to my inspiration.” Still - listeners who are bound to do so will discover the long winters, the crystal clear mountain air, and the mystic fjord landscapes in her former records. “Such images are only created in the eye of the beholder,” reflects Rebekka. “As musicians we shouldn’t be afraid of these clichés, of images others associate with our music. Our listeners notice things that musicians are not aware of. When I listen to Brazilian music, certain images come to my mind which no Brazilian would ever think of because it is their everyday music. So I have no problem with it if somebody recognizes Norway in my songs. That’s fine with me.”

On “Morning Hours”, however, everything is different. It’s Rebekka’s first album recorded in the US. And it’s her first collaboration with Craig Street, a producer who himself draws inspiration from his native country. Therefore the music of this album is evoking American landscapes rather than Scandinavian distances. May it be images of the Indian summer, the heat of the South, rugged East Coast motives or even Midwest sceneries.

The beautiful lyrics of her songs suggest that the artist wrote about personal experiences. But the impression is deceiving. “These songs are not about private matters, they are not autobiographical,” the singer admits. “I write about events and people, and I ask myself how these people feel at that moment.” A fine example for this is the song “Powder Room Collapse”. “When women put on their make-up in front of a mirror you can see pretty well what’s going on in their minds. It could be virtually anything. They could be thinking about their financial situation or question themselves ‘Is my hair still okay?’” But personal experiences - including those of romantic nature - must have inspired her to a certain extent. There’s no other explanation for how intimate and romantic these songs occur. On “Morning Hours” Rebekka Bakken sometimes needs only two octaves of her four octave voice. “These songs simply did not call for exaggerated vocal acrobacies,” she explains. A reduction that did a wonderful job on this album.

neil young-crazy horse, Cowgirl in the sand

Müziğe Buffalo Springfield grubunda başlayan Young, ilk solo albümü Neil Young'ı 1968 yılında çıkarmış, bu albümde özellikle "The Loner" ve "The old Laughing Lady" parçaları beğeni toplamıştır. 1969'da ileride de pek çok kez beraber çalışacağı grup Crazy Horse'la "Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere" albümünü de yayınlamıştır. Bu albümde "Cowgirl in The Sand", "Down By The River" ve özellikle" Cinnamon Girl" adlı parçalar Young'ın en ünlü parçalarındandır.
Bu iki albümünde elektrik gitara ağırlık veren Young, 1970 yılında akustik çalışmalara yönelmiş ve efsane albümü" After The Gold Rush"ı çıkarmıştır. Aynı ismi taşıyan şarkı, "Only Love Can Break Your Heart", "Don't Let It Bring You Down" ve "When You Dance I Can Really Love"la birlikte ABD'nin Güney eyaletlerindeki ırkçılığı eleştiren "Southern Man" de bu albümdendir.
1972 yılında yayınlanan Harvest ise tüm zamanların en iyi albümlerinden biri olarak kabul edilmektedir. "A Man Needs A Maid", "Old Man", "Alabama", "The Needle And The Damage Done" ve "Words (Between The Lines Of Age)" bu albümün başarılı şarkılarındandır.

Alvin Lee, The Bluest Blues

Alvin Lee (born Graham Barnes, 19 December 1944, Mansfield, England) is an English rock guitarist and singer. He began playing guitar at the age of 13, and with Leo Lyons formed the core of the band Ten Years After in 1960. Influenced by his parents' collection of jazz and blues records, it was the advent of rock and roll that truly sparked his interest and creativity, and guitarists like Chuck Berry and Scotty Moore provided his inspiration.
The Jaybirds, as Lee's early band was called from 1962, were popular locally, and had success at Star-Club in Hamburg, Germany (since that time lead guitarist Lee also took lead vocals), following The Beatles there the same year. But it was not until the band moved to London in 1966 and changed its name, first to Jaybird, dropping 'The' and 's' to make it sound more contemporary; then to Blues Yard (for one gig at the Marquee Club); and finally to Ten Years After (TYA), that international success beckoned. The band secured a residency at the Marquee Club, and an invitation to the Windsor Jazz & Blues Festival in 1967 led to their first recording contract. The self titled debut album surprisingly received play on San Francisco, California's underground radio stations and was enthusiastically embraced by listeners, including concert promoter Bill Graham, who invited the band to tour the United States for the first time in the summer of 1968. Audiences were immediately taken by Lee's distinctive, soulful, rapid fire guitar playing and the band's innovative mix of blues, swing jazz and rock, and an American love affair began.[citation needed] TYA would ultimately tour the U.S. twenty-eight times in seven years, more than any other UK band.

Martina Topley-Bird - Sandpaper Kisses

Martina Topley-Bird (born 7 May 1975) is a British vocalist who first gained fame as the featured female vocalist on trip hop pioneer Tricky's debut album Maxinquaye (a printing error credited her as "Martine"). She was educated at Clifton College where she sang in the choir.[1] It was while she was a young precocious teenager at the school that she met trip hop pioneer Tricky.[2] She continued her collaboration with Tricky on his follow-up albums Nearly God, Pre-Millennium Tension and Angels with Dirty Faces.
Following a falling-out of their professional and personal relationship in 1998, she began pursuing a solo career. It was not until 2003 that she released her debut album, Quixotic (Independiente Records), mainly produced by Martina and production team AMP9 (Alex McGowan, Steve Crittall, Nick Bird) at Space Eko Recording Studios London. Upon its release, it received positive reviews from critics and was a finalist for the 2003 Mercury Music Prize. The song "Sandpaper Kisses" from the album was featured in the video game, Fahrenheit (released in North America as Indigo Prophecy).
The album finally saw a release, of sorts, in the United States in July 2004 when the Palm Pictures label released a re-designed and re-sequenced version with a new title (Anything), a trimmed-down tracklisting and all-new cover art.
The following year she appeared on the Starbucks compilation album, Sweetheart 2005: Love Songs, which features contemporary musicians covering classic love songs. She sang "I Only Have Eyes for You", a song originally by composer Harry Warren and lyricist Al Dubin.
Her second solo album, The Blue God, was released in May 2008. The track "Carnies" was released as the first single on 3 March 2008[3]and reached No.20 on the UK Indie Charts.[4] "Poison" was released as the second single[5] and reached No.9 on the Indie Charts.[4]
In 2009, she worked with Massive Attack, the track "Psyche" will be appearing on their forthcoming EP and album. She is also currently touring with them as their support act and providing guest vocals.
