Marcel Khalifé
Composer, Oud Master and Performer

Marcel Khalifé was born on June 10, 1950 in Amchit, Lebanon. He studied the Oud (the Arabic lute) at the Beirut National Conservatory of Music and graduated in 1971, and, ever since, has been injecting a new life into the Oud.

From 1972 to 1975, Marcel Khalifé taught at the Beirut National Conservatory of Music, public Universities and other local private music institutions. During that same period, he toured the Middle East, North Africa, Europe and the United States giving solo performances on the Oud.

Oud playing was traditionally constrained by the strict techniques that governed its playing. Highly talented and skillful musicians such as Marcel Khalifé were, however, able to free the instrument from those constraints and thus greatly expanding its possibilities.

In 1972, Marcel Khalifé created a musical group in his native village, Amchit, with the goal of reviving its musical heritage and the Arabic chorale. The first performances took place in Lebanon. 1976 saw the birth of Marcel Khalifé's Al Mayadine Ensemble. Enriched by the previous ensemble's musical experiences, Al Mayadine's notoriety went well beyond Lebanon. Accompanied by his musical ensemble, Marcel Khalifé began a lifelong far-reaching musical journey, performing in Arab countries, Europe, the United States, Canada, South America, Australia, and Japan.

Marcel Khalifé has been invited several times to festivals of international fame such as: Baalbeck, Beit Eddine (Lebanon), Carthage, El Hammamat (Tunisia), Timgad (Algeria), Jarash (Jordan), Arles (France), Krems, Linz (Austria), Bremen (Germany), Re Orient (Sweden), Pavia (Italy), World Music Festival in San Francisco, New York, Cleveland (USA), Wellington Music Festival (New Zealand) and the Fes Festival of World Sacred Music in Morocco.

Gabriel Yared (Arapça: جبرائيل يارد) (d. 7 Ekim 1949, Beyrut) Lübnan kökenli Fransız besteci, Fransız ve Amerikan sineması için yaptığı film müzikleri ile tanınır.

Gabriel Yared (born 7 October 1949) is a Lebanese award winning composer, best known for his work in French and American cinema.
Born in Beirut, Lebanon, his work in France included the scores for Betty Blue and Camille Claudel. He later began working on English language films, particularly those directed by Anthony Minghella. He won an Oscar for his work on The English Patient (1996) and was also nominated for The Talented Mr. Ripley (1999) and Cold Mountain (2003).

At the age of 7, his father sent Yared to an accordion teacher. Two years later he stopped his accordion lessons and started music theory and piano lessons. His piano teacher thought that he had no future in music.
Although he was not a natural pianist, he was interested in reading music.
At the age of 14, his piano teacher died, so he was to replace him as the organist of Université Saint-Joseph. He used the university's library to read all the work of Bach, Schumann, and many others. This extensive reading inspired his first original composition, a piano waltz.
Yared gained a degree in Law. His formal musical education only began when he travelled to France in 1969, and attended the École Normale de Musique de Paris as a non-registered student. There he learned the rules of music composition from Henri Dutilleux.
At the end of 1971, he went to Brazil to visit his uncle. There, the president of the World Federation of light music festivals asked him to write a song to represent the Lebanese in the Rio de Janeiro Song Festival. His song won the first prize.
In Brazil, he kept on performing with his small orchestra. Yared maintains that to this day Brazil has greatly influenced his work.
In 1975, he arranged the album Minacantalucio for the popular Italian singer Mina.
He then went back to France, where he met with the Costa Brothers and collaborated with them. There, he wrote many orchestrations, and ended up with three thousand orchestrations in six years.
Not to be limited by orchestrating, he collaborated with Jacques Dutronc, Françoise Hardy, Charles Aznavour, Mireille Mathieu, etc.. He had collaborations with many musicians, and contributed to many radio and TV jingles, such as TF1 news jingles which he has created since 1980.

Fairouz, qadeesh kan fe nas

Feyruz (Fairuz, Fairouz, Fayrouz, Arapça: فيروز), asıl adıyla Nouhad Haddad, Lübnanlı şarkıcı. Türkiye Mardin doğumlu Wadi Haddad ile Lübnanlı Maruni Liza Alboustani'nin ilk kızı olarak 21 Kasım 1935'te Jabal Alarz'da doğdu. Ailesi Maruni Arap Hıristiyandır. Arapça'da Feyruz (firuze) turkuaz demektir.
Aile daha sonra Beyrut'a taşınmıştır. Nouhad, müziğe okul korosunda başlamıştır. Eski şarkı yazarı ve kompozitörlerden Mohamed Flayfel 'in yardımıyla Lübnan Radyosu Korosu'na seçilmiş ve radyo yönetmeni Halim Elrumi aracılığıyla Assy Rahbani ve Mansour Rahbani kardeşlerle tanışmıştır.
Şarkı yazarı ve kompozitör olan Rahbani kardeşler, geleneksel Arap şarkılarını ve bazı Batı müziği eserlerini de yeniden düzenlemekteydiler. Fairuz, bu tanışmanın ardından Rahbani kardeşlerin çalışmalarını yorumlayacaktır. İlk çalışmaları geleneksel bir şarkı olan "Elbint Elshalabia"nın (en popüler şarkılarından biridir) yeni bir düzenlemesi ile söz ve müziği Rahbani kardeşlere ait olan "Nehna Wel Amar Jiran"dır.
1955 'ün temmuzunda Assy Rahbani ile evlenmiş, kocası ile birlikte Beyrut'un kuzeyindeki Antelias 'a taşınmıştır. 1956 'da Ziad isminde bir oğulları olmuştur.
Fairuz'un Rahbani kardeşlerle çalışmaları Arap dünyasında büyük bir popülerliğe erişmiş, Batı'da da önemli yankı uyandırmıştır. 1971 yılında Batı'da oldukça başarılı geçen bir turneye çıkan Fairuz, New York 'ta Carnegie Hall, Londra 'da Albert Hall ve Paris 'te Olimpia'da konserler vermiştir.
Rahbani kardeşlerin yazdığı birçok müzikalde de sahne almış olan Fairuz; Yusuf Şahin'in Bayya' al-Khawatim (Rings' Salesman), Henry Barakat'ın Safar Barlik (The Exile) ve Bint al-Haris (The Daughter of the Watchman) adlı sinema filmlerinde de oynamıştır.
Lübnan İç Savaşı (1975 - 1990) sırasında Lübnan'ı terk etmeyen ve ülkesinin birliği için mücadele eden Fairuz, müzik çalışmalarına devam etmektedir.
